As part of “Around the World Tour 2007”, Paavo Järvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (DKPB) visited Japan in July and performed all Beethoven programs in 5 concerts and one lecture concert within a week. “Dancing ensemble” is the headline of Yomiuri Newspaper, hailing the concert as “reviving the original excitement in Beethoven’s music”.

Grammy-award winning Paavo Järvi has built a remarkable conducting reputation. Born in Tallinn, Estonia, he studied percussion and conducting at the Tallinn School of Music then, in 1980, moved to the USA where he continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music and at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, with Leonard Bernstein.

Among his other conducting appointments, Paavo Järvi holds the post of Artistic Leader of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (DKPB). Adding to his growing discography with this orchestra, he is in the middle of recording a complete cycle of Beethoven symphonies for SONY BMG Masterworks. The first of these - a CD featuring Symphonies Nos. 3 and 8 - was released in 2006. The cycle will be completed in 2009.

Järvi’s concept of recording Beethoven’s symphonies is to avoid the chronological recording, but to match the “famous” symphonies with the “less well known”, i.e. 5&1, 3&8, 4&7. “To me, this is the most interesting approach artistically,” says Järvi. “We are also trying to redefine the notion of “historical performance practice,” incorporating natural instruments wherever possible, but the goal is not just to have authentic performance because we have authentic instruments. It is because we know their style and can adapt this style to contemporary instruments as well.”
