On Becoming a Person

Authored by Carl Rogers, one of America's most distinguished psychologists, this philosophical and provocative book summarizes his extensive experience in guiding individuals toward personal growth through understanding their inherent limitations and potential. It challenges many established concepts of traditional psychology by focusing on human potentiality rather than just pathology or minute behavioral analysis.

This work stands apart from psychology derived primarily from experimental laboratories or Freudian theory. Rogers, alongside figures like Gordon Allport, Abraham Maslow, and Rollo May, advocates for a psychology concerned with fostering harmoniously mature individuals capable of flexible relationships, increased creativity, and resistance to external control.

• Explores fundamental questions: What is personal growth? Under what conditions is it possible? How can one person effectively help another?
• Discusses the fostering of creativity and potential development in humans.
• Challenges traditional psychological concepts by focusing on growth and potentiality.
• Non-technical language makes it accessible beyond clinical settings.

While summarizing Dr. Rogers' experience, this book is essential reading not only for psychologists and psychiatrists but also for teachers, counsellors, religious and social workers, labour-management specialists, and anyone interested in the process of 'becoming.'
