Can I play my games from the hard drive?

It depends on the games. PS4 games can be played directly from an external hard drive on both PS4 and PS5. PS5 games, however, must be transferred to the internal SSD of the PS5 console before they can be played.

Why can’t I play PS5 games from an external hard drive?

PS5 games cannot be played from USB storage because they require the high-speed performance of the internal SSD. Even an external SSD cannot provide the required speed due to USB interface limitations.

Why do I need an external hard drive for the PS5?

Redownloading many PS5 games takes a long time. If the games are stored on an external hard drive, they can be transferred back to the internal SSD quickly, freeing up internal storage in the meantime.
