ORIGIN STORY

Six Minutes to Midnight is set in Bexhill on Sea where Eddie Izzard’s family is from and where he spent a lot of time as a child. His connection to the town and his success led the Bexhill Museum to ask him to become a patron. On Eddie’s first visit to the museum the curator there, Julian Porter, showed Eddie the school badge from the real Augusta-Victoria College for girls, sparking the whole idea for the film. A cross in the right-hand corner and a union jack in the left-hand corner is an arresting and disconcerting image which piqued Eddie’s curiosity. Through conversations with local historians and the museum he discovered the school was a finishing school for daughters and god-daughters of important Germans.

THE ARTISTIC VISION

Andy Goddard (Director) was visually excited by using a quintessential British seaside town as the canvas for this story. It’s such an iconic setting and landscape of a bygone era. The juxtaposition between the fun and whimsy of a seaside town, with the political machinations of war sets up a dynamic and unique backdrop. These locations were key to Andy to really capture the spirit of the time. He made sure to use small visual details that indicated Britain was preparing for a war which was happening in the background of the main narrative.
