Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection Symphony' [CD]

Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, known as the “Resurrection Symphony”, is performed by Sir Simon Rattle with the Bavarian Radio Chorus and Symphony Orchestra. This one-disc CD presents a work that moves from a funeral rite to a choral finale focused on resurrection.

Mahler’s Second Symphony explores questions of life, suffering and what comes after, using dramatic contrasts and richly coloured orchestration. Its final movement brings soloists and chorus together to proclaim “Aufersteh’n wirst du!” (“You shall rise again!”).

Written between 1888 and 1894, the symphony follows a journey from the funeral march of its opening movement to a triumphant close. It is one of Mahler’s most popular works and a defining piece of the Late Romantic symphonic repertoire.
