Henry Threadgill - Cut You Where You Was [CD]

Cut You Where You Was marks the highly anticipated return of saxophonist, flutist, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Henry Threadgill's flagship band, Zooid. This release celebrates the 25th anniversary of their first album, Up Popped the Two Lips, which was the inaugural release by Pi Recordings, founded with the specific intention of documenting Threadgill's new work.

The album showcases the continued evolution of Zooid's distinctive sound. Featuring original members Liberty Ellman on guitar, Jose Davila on trombone and tuba, Elliot Humberto Kavee on drums, and cellist Christopher Hoffman, the band demonstrates a profound understanding of Threadgill's intricate compositions. They achieve their signature quality with a less rigid adherence to the interval-based compositional system that earned Threadgill a Pulitzer Prize.

Inspired by Henry Threadgill's fascination with early recording technologies, the album comprises a series of brief pieces. These short durations challenge each musician to deliver their musical statements with immediate impact, fostering new avenues for musical expression and solidifying Cut You Where You Was as another masterful work from a pivotal artist.
